A lot has been going on behind the scenes in the past two to three weeks. After the demolision of the old shed, Dan has been spending most of his free time sifting through and saving the old cypress boards (future projects!). And I have mostly been spending time getting our current home ready for the market, spending time with our real estate agent to get the staging just right, and mostly stressing about the whole process. I am not ready for that new selling process to begin.
Behind the scenes, several things have been going on. We finally got the permit to install a Modad (sewage thingy). Without the Modad, we can't proceed with most of our plan. So this week, the big beautiful sewage tank arrived and was installed, not without a few hicups of course. First of all, Brignac St. is a narrow one-lane street which means challenges for a tank truck and a large flat-bed truck pulling a trailer. Second, the entry into the yard is not very wide either, especially for extra large vehicles. The only way to get the trucks and equipment into the yard was to take down the chain link fence. No problem, they had the equipment on the trailer that could take care of that. We had planned on taking it down anyway so they did us a favor. After maneuvering the trucks around the yard to get everything in position, everything went pretty smoothly until the final drainage pipes were almost in place. That's when they hit and ruptured a gas line and work stopped immediately. The gas company came out in full force (4 trucks and 6 workers!) to repair the lines before the Modad work was completed. Also, on this same day, the power company came out to repair the electrical lines to the house. We could barely run the lights in the house before this repair and could not run any power tools or our mini-frig. Progress at last!
Although a new sewage tank is exciting, even more exciting is that a small crew has started to work on the porches on the old house. The old rotting porch boards have been removed and the braces have been put in place to keep the porch roof from falling down. As my brother said, the house looks like it is on life support. I guess it will get worse before it gets better. But today we see new wood beams and boards giving the porches a little bit of new life as they are leveling and adding support to the porches. We should see more progress on this next week, I hope.
Also behind the scenes, we are finalizing blue prints for the new garage with our tiny apartment. Now that the shiny new modad is installed, we should be able to proceed with the building permit process to build the garage. I am sure that will bring new challenges.
Finally, we confuse our kids everytime we talk about the "old" house. Is it the old 'newer' house or the new 'older' house? So we need to get used to saying the Prairieville house and the Paulina house. So this is only one of the problems of people who own two houses!
